Clearwire is an internet service that does not require phone lines.
It does not need cable. It gets it signal from cellular towers. The
signal is wirelessly sent in encrypted form to the modem which then
decrypts the signal and translates into regular web surfing on your
computer. All data sent between the modem and the cell tower is
encrypted and on a special frequency that can't be "just
intercepted."

Whether the service is wireless in your house is up to you. The PC
Cards are completely wireless, but in PCMCIA or Express Card forms
for laptops only.

The standard modem does require a power cord plugged into an outlet
and an ethernet cable plugged into your computer or into a router. A
router will allow you to share your internet connection with more
than one computer, and a wireless router will allow the same
sharing, but wirelessly throughout the house.

In addition to the internet services, Clearwire also offers phone
service. This is frequently refered to as either digital phone or
VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) and sometimes as internet phone.
Clearwire phone service requires an additional piece of hardware
called an ATA that connects to your standard modem and to your
telephone. You do not need a special phone, the phone you already
have will work just fine. |
